Performance based writing.
Mare Roorda writes poetic stories specifically to the participants in her conceptual work Verhaallijn. The starting text of the story – Chapter I – is the same for everyone. Based on this text, Mare meets with the participant by telephone. Inspired by the participant’s reaction and interpretation, Mare writes the next chapter. This process repeats until four new chapters have been written and the personal story is complete.
Each person is offered the same starting point and space, yet the story will develop differently. The different life experiences and perceptions ensure that the stories take on a different form and meaning for everyone.
During the implementation of the project, unexpected and profound conversations occurred in response to the written chapters.
As a result of the individual conversations with the participants, Mare Roorda created collages which form a visual complement to the work.
Author and participants were strangers to each other.
